The production took place in modified warehouse spaces spread throughout the region as well as in Cape Town Film Studios, which is the primary production base for South African film services. The amount of time spent on location work was a far smaller portion of the overall production schedule.
The water tank used for filming scenes onboard the Endurance measures 60 meters by 90 meters and was created specifically for the Tomb Raider shoot at Cape Town Film Studios.
Hout Bay, which is located close to Cape Town, was made to seem like a port in Hong Kong. The production team’s contributions included the creation of floating walkways and cafes as well as the procurement of an innovative Spider Cam from the United Kingdom. As a result of the fact that this camera is powered by a network of overhead cables, Uthaug has further creative latitude in the photographs that he selects to take.
Other places in the Cape Winelands, such as Paarl, offered forest vistas and environments that were appropriate for the setting of a camp story. In addition, the group discovered an ancient quarry, which they used as the location to construct the exterior of a tomb entrance. This tomb entrance is said to be situated on a made-up island in Japan, according to the story that is told in the book.
“The tomb entrance was an abandoned granite quarry that we came across,” explains Gary Freeman, who worked as the production designer for the movie. “I guess that it hadn’t been utilised in 80 years,” Freeman estimates. This information came from Freeman’s contribution. She said, “but it also bore the scars of the granite mining, so even if it had magnificent geography and interesting people, it was not without its problems.”
“If you can see somebody constructing a lovely pagoda underground all those years ago, you have to ask yourself, ‘How did they get in there?'” How were they able to get away from the area? Because of this, the scarring ended up working in our favour. We gave the impression that it was overrun by covering it with vines and other types of common green trash such as branches and leaves.
At Atlantic Film Studios in Cape Town, which is a facility with eight stages and a rear lot area, set pieces for the interiors of the tombs were constructed as part of the production.
In reference to the production, which consisted of a great deal of different technical aspects, Genevieve Hofmeyr of Moonlighting Films made the following remark to KFTV: “The water work was hard and tough.” The production incorporated a number of different highly technological elements.
“It is quite obvious that we have improved our talents across the majority of creative professions.” The expansion of Hong Kong Harbor presented another obstacle, which was the construction of an outdoor water tank with dimensions of 60 metres by 90 metres in record time.
